Create For Yourself First

We all see, hear, taste, and feel life through our own filters. It is no different with art. Ask 5 people to critique the same painting and you may very well get 5 different responses. Ask those same 5 people what emotions that piece evokes for them and, again, you could get very different answers from each person. That doesn’t make any of those responses wrong or right. They are just different and they are valid for each person.

As an artist (whether you paint, sing, write, act, etc), use your creativity to give a voice to your heart and soul. Be excited about what it does for you! Don’t worry so much about what others think of your work. They will see what they see. Try not to worry about “not being good enough”. There will always be someone more skilled than you and someone with less skill. Continue to create from the heart and enjoy what you do. Remember that all of the great masters had critics and they just kept learning and making more art, music, plays, and novels. They did what they did because they could not do otherwise.

Love what you create. Appreciate and be proud of it. And if your work brings out a smile, a tear, a or a sigh in someone else then . . . added bonus.

This world is but a canvas to our imagination. – Henry David Thoreau
